FAQ

  • Mindfulness-based therapy services refer to therapeutic approaches that incorporate mindfulness techniques and practices such as awareness, breathing and focused attention into the treatment process. Mindfulness-based therapies aim to help individuals become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surroundings in the present moment, without judgment.

As a social worker, I've always believed that the quality of the relationship I build with someone is equally important to how effective I can be in helping them navigate their stresses and challenges. In my early career, many mental health treatments focused on "fixing" and "changing" individuals and their situations. While sometimes beneficial, often individuals felt trapped in their daily struggles, unable to slow down or feel safe enough to try something new. Introducing mindfulness practices helped individuals learn to "pause" and initiate change. Over the years, I've deepened my own mindfulness and self-compassion practices, finding them to be the most effective and beneficial for those I serve.

Mindfulness and self-compassion enable us to live with greater acceptance towards ourselves and our circumstances. When we fully acknowledge and embrace the painful aspects of life, treating ourselves with kindness in the face of that pain, we can navigate through it with more ease.

    • Virtual Therapy sessions: (50 min)-$225

    • Virtual Individual Clinical Supervision for LMSW: $100-$200 per hour depending on requirements

    • Speaking/Training/Presentations/Workshops: These will be billed at an hourly rate of $225 per hour + an additional hourly fee for any necessary preparation and/or transportation (if in person is desired and more than 35 miles from Baltimore, MD).

  • I do not accept insurance at my practice. “Why?” you may ask. Insurance requires me to submit a diagnosis to them. Often times the individuals I work with do not have a reimbursable diagnosis and being required to provide them with one would be considered malpractice.

I see therapy as a financial commitment, like a gym membership for your mental well-being. Not taking insurance allows me to keep my caseload small so I’m better able to focus on your needs, sort of like a personal trainer! This allows for more flexibility in my schedule and increased privacy for you.

  • Prior to our first scheduled intake session, a card will be placed on file. At the end of each session, your card will be billed.

A good portion of those I work with use options such as Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flex Spending Accounts (FSA).

  • Many people prefer to meet online from the comfort of their own home. KWD Wellness only provides virtual care. When receiving services, you must be physically present in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia.

  • Do you want support, but find it challenging to make to find time and balance it all? Now you don’t have to commute or even leave home. Online care allows us to work collaboratively in a supportive environment, wherever is most convenient and comfortable for you.

It is also important to know that online therapy is not appropriate for everyone. Those who are in severe crisis, or who are actively contemplating suicide would not be best helped by virtual care and should seek a therapist locally with in person availability. If these concerns every arise during the course of our work, we will have an emergency plan in place to connect you with local resources.

At KWD Wellness, we provide counseling via confidential, real time, 2-way video. We use a HIPAA-compliant secure video conferencing to make online-based therapy convenient and confidential.

All you need is a private space, internet connection and a smart phone, tablet, laptop or personal computer. When you schedule your appointment, a secure video link is created for your appointment and sent to you via email. When it’s time for your scheduled appointment, simply click the link and we will be connected.

  • The length of time an individual or couple needs to be in therapy can vary greatly depending on several factors, including the individual's/couples’ specific needs, goals, and progress in therapy. Therapy duration may range from a few weeks to several months or even years. It is ultimately up to the therapist and the client to determine the duration based on ongoing assessment and mutual agreement.

  • In our initial intake session, I'll compassionately gather essential information, discuss confidentiality, and provide an overview of the therapy process. We'll explore your personal history, assess current challenges, and collaboratively set therapy goals aligned with your intentions. This empowers our therapeutic relationship. As a mindfulness-based therapist, I'll introduce mindfulness practices, both in and out of sessions, to cultivate attitudes and skills supporting your goals. This session offers insight into the therapeutic process and helps tailor support to your unique needs.

  • Under the law, as a health care provider, I will give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance for services an estimate of their bill for therapy services.

This estimate is called a “Good Faith Estimate" and explains how much your therapy will cost. Here are a few key things you should know about your Good Faith Estimate:

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any health care items or services upon request or when scheduling such items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

If you schedule a health care service at least 3 business days in advance, you are entitled a Good Faith Estimate in writing within 1 business day after scheduling. If you schedule a health care service at least 10 business days in advance, you are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate in writing within 3 business days after scheduling. You can also ask for a Good Faith Estimate prior to scheduling.

If you receive a bill that is $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

It's recommended that you save a copy of your Good Faith Estimate for your records.
